How Far Should a Fire Pit be From a House?
Guidelines for Placing a Fire Pit Safely Away from a House
Fire pits can add a cozy, serene feel to any outdoor space, but when you install one on your porch or patio, you’ll need to keep in mind that open flames can be quite dangerous. If you don’t place your fire pit a safe distance away from your home, you could risk causing an uncontrolled fire. Here are some tips for properly placing a fire pit near your house.

- All fire pits should be at least 10 to 20 feet away from a house or other structure.
- This is the recommended minimum distance, but the farther away you install your fire pit, the less likely a fire hazard it will become.
- You’ll also want to keep your fire pit at least 10 to 20 feet away from any trees, shrubs and other flammable material.

If you’re still concerned about keeping your home safe from fire hazards, you may want to invest in a screen for your fire pit. Many fire pits come with screens that are fitted specifically for them to protect rogue sparks or logs from slipping out, but if yours doesn’t you can often purchase a compatible screen separately.
