5 Ways to Turn Your Home into an Indoor Oasis

With every new year comes new opportunities, ideas and goals: Is one of your resolutions to accomplish a relaxed and organized home? Every home has the potential to be an indoor oasis of sorts, and with a few tips, you can get to the point where you don’t come home every day to clutter and stress, but instead arrive to find serenity and piece.

1. Organize Your Most Cluttered Spaces (photo by Osseous)

There are many methods available to easily organize your home, but first and foremost: purge. Get rid of anything that has not been used in the past 6 months, and ear-mark it for a future garage sale (or donate it to a charity). If all it is doing in your home is collecting dust, then it does not need to be there.

Next, one of the most cluttered spaces in my home would be the cupboards under the sink. A tension rod under the sink provides you with a great space to hang your cleaners or you could also place a shelf in the cupboard for your for them if you do not have a tension rod available. Extra bins will give you a place for your dish soap, dish clothes, towels and cleaning accessories that cannot be hung or would not stay on the shelf. You can even mount holders for plastic wrap, wax paper, and tin foil (and any other kitchen supplies that come on rolls) to the inside of this door, for easy access to these items.

For other areas of the home, magnetic strips are great for items like tweezers, bobby pins, nail clippers and metal nail files. Clear, plastic craft boxes make a great storage option for batteries (plus clear bins make it easy to see what is stored in a box), and metal towel bars installed on the inside of a pantry or cupboard door are perfect for storing lids for pots and pans.

Get creative! There are so many ideas out there for easily organizing your home, and you can target the areas of your home that need it most.

2. Accessorize with Warmth

If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace in your home, why not accessorize it with a small decorative log rack, or a log rack with fireside tool hooks? Plus, garden statues and gnomes, traditionally reserved for outdoor décor and warmer weather, can also look great near your fireplace (with the added bonus of keeping them in good condition, as many garden statues should be placed indoors during inclement weather).

For those who are not lucky enough to have a fireplace a compact tabletop fireplace, or ventless indoor fireplace, will add warmth to any room, and provide the same ambiance as a traditional fireplace. These decorative units run on bioethanol fuel, which is clean-burning and safe for indoor environments.

3. Add Greenery

Plants of all kinds really bring a feeling of serenity, calm and life to any space. You can consider tropical plants if you keep your home warm enough, while succulents like aloe vera, cactuses and other desert plants require very little maintenance. But feel free to go with any plant that you find appealing and have time to care for.

If you are worried about leaving plants unattended on surfaces at your home because of children or pets, you can get macramé plant hangers to instead suspend your greenery from ceilings or plant hooks, safely out of reach from curious children and pets.

4. Bring the Outdoors Inside

Some days the weather is simply not agreeable enough to spend time outdoors. Having a space indoors that provides you with the same relaxed feeling as an outdoor space can is a great way to unwind, bet it with a book or a nap. If you have a room in your home with lots of windows/adequate natural light, like a 4-season room or a sunroom, these make ideal locations for bringing the outdoors in.

Some ideas for this special space include hanging up a set of hammock swing chairs, or placing a hammock/stand combo in the room for napping. Be sure to have side tables nearby to hold refreshments, and adding a bookshelf to this space, filled with some of your favorite novels and magazines, is sure to make this a great space.

You can even bring the sounds of the outdoors in by getting a sound machine that features relaxing nature sounds. A wall fountain or tabletop fountain will also help to sooth your mind after a long day.

5. Add a Water Fountain

Indoor water fountains provide your home with positive energy and welcoming ambiance, and are great when placed by the front door, whether you choose a table fountain or a hanging wall-mounted indoor fountain style. The reason fountains are so enjoyable in the home is because the sounds of flowing water help ease stress and provide a sense of vitality.

If you are not sure how a fountain will fare in your home, start small: place a tabletop fountain on a console table in the foyer, or on any surface near the front entrance of your home. A fountain placed on the kitchen island counter can also provide benefits and be ideal. Additionally, table fountains are perfect options for the office or bedroom, too, because the meditative water sounds can help drown out unwanted background noise, creating a place where it is easy to focus while being relaxed.
